DTG vs DTF T-Shirt Printing: How to choose?
Both DTG (Direct-to-Garment) and DTF (Direct-to-Film) are modern printing methods that create high-quality, full-color designs. The main difference is how the ink gets onto the t-shirt.
With DTG printing, a specialized printer acts like a giant inkjet printer for textiles, spraying the ink directly onto the fabric. Think of it like printing a photo directly onto a piece of paper. This method works best on natural fibers like cotton, as the ink soaks into the fibers, creating a very soft, breathable feel that's part of the garment itself. The finished print won't crack or peel.
DTF printing is a two-step process. First, the design is printed in reverse onto a special transfer film. Then, a heat press is used to transfer the printed design and a powder adhesive from the film directly onto the fabric. This process creates a thin, flexible layer on top of the garment. It's more versatile than DTG because it works well on a wider range of materials, including synthetics like polyester, and the colors tend to be very vibrant, especially on dark fabrics. DTF prints can have a slightly different feel, but they are also very durable and resistant to cracking.
Ultimately, the best method depends on the material of the shirt and the desired look. DTG is a great choice for soft, breathable cotton tees, while DTF excels at vibrant prints on various fabrics, including blends and synthetics.
