A Brief History of the Maine State Flag

The coat of arms of the State of Maine is placed on a blue field of the same shade of blue in the flag of the United States. Adopted by the Legislature of 1909.

Maine's state flag has its origins in the years following statehood. Maine was admitted to the Union in 1820, but the state did not adopt an official flag for nearly a century.

The 1901 Flag — Maine's first official state flag was adopted in 1901. It featured a buff (cream-colored) background with the state coat of arms at the center and a pine tree and North Star in the corners. This design was relatively simple and reflected the symbolic elements already associated with Maine.

The 1909 Redesign — The current flag was adopted on February 23, 1909, replacing the earlier version. It follows the common "blue field" pattern used by many U.S. states: a dark blue background bearing the state coat of arms at its center.
