Illinois Flag History

Illinois State Flag Design: Seal of Illinois on a white field
Designed by: Sharon Tyndale
Illinois has had two official state flags. The first Illinois state flag was adopted on July 6, 1915, after a vigorous campaign by Mrs. Ella Park Lawrence, state regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
Following a contest among Illinois DAR chapters to design an Illinois flag, the Rockford chapter’s entry, designed by Miss Lucy Derwent, was chosen. State Sen. Raymond D. Meeker introduced a bill making the DAR’s design the official state flag, and it became law on July 6, 1915.
More than 50 years later, a move to design a new flag was initiated by Chief Petty Officer Bruce McDaniel of Waverly, then serving in Vietnam. The identity of the Illinois flag hanging among other state flags in his mess hall was often questioned because it did not carry the state’s name. Therefore, McDaniel requested the word "Illinois" be added to the flag.
A bill to amend the original Flag Act of 1915 was sponsored by State Rep. Jack Walker of Lansing and a new flag with the word “Illinois” was approved by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie on Sept. 17, 1969. Ogilvie then appointed a committee to develop specifications for the new state flag to ensure its uniformity of design and color in its reproduction by flag makers.
Mrs. Sanford Hutchison of Greenfield, who had done extensive research on the official design of the state seal, submitted a flag design that contained all the required elements as specified by law. Her design — a white field with the word "Illinois" and an exact replica of the state seal — became the official state flag of Illinois on July 1, 1970.

How long should a flag last?
This is the most common question asked in the industry and the most difficult to answer. No two flags will wear the same due to weather conditions and how often the flag is flown. Our flags offer the best stitching and highest quality materials to get your flag off to a great start.
How can I prolong the life of my flag?
Do not hang a flag where the wind will whip it against rough surface, such as tree branches, wires or cables or the outside of your home or building. Inspect your flags regularly for signs of wear. Repair any minor rips or tears right away this can be mended easily with a sewing machine or sewing kit. Keep the surface of the pole free of dirt, rust or corrosion that could damage or stain your flag.
Can I wash or launder my flag?
We recommend that you hand-wash your flag with mild soap, rinse thoroughly and air dry. You can also use a dry cleaning service.
Is it okay to fly my flag during heavy winds or inclement weather?
Exposing your flag to rain, wind, snow or high winds will shorten the life of your flag considerably. If you leave your flag exposed to the elements, it will greatly reduce the life of your flag.
Can I fly other flags on the same pole as a USA Flag?
Yes, as long as your pole is large enough to support the weight of the flags. The USA Flag must always fly at the top. The flag underneath should be at least one foot lower and be one size smaller than the USA Flag. Flags of other countries are not to be flown beneath the USA Flag.
How do I properly dispose of a flag?
If your flag is significantly faded, torn or tattered it is time to retire your flag. Your flag should be retired privately in a dignified manner. In addition, many local community organizations have flag disposal centers that will dispose of your flag for you.
